Siglo Rioja just might be the best value wine that money can buy. There’s a wine out there to suit every budget. Some people like to spend hundreds – or thousands – of euro per bottle. If you’re one of them, and you can afford it, then more power to you! Grab that bottle of Château Margaux or Pomerol and away you go! Not everybody has the bankroll (or desire) to spend that much on their wine, so luckily there are lots of value options out there, with Siglo Rioja chief among them.

What makes Siglo wine such good value?

It’s important to make a distinction: Value and (low) price are not the same thing, particularly when it comes to wine. Essentially, you can say that a wine is good value when you would happily pay more for it than it costs – that is, it outperforms its price point. Siglo Rioja is one such wine, and it punches way above its rather modest price tag. Whether your measure is critic’s score or simple enjoyment, Siglo wine overachieves, and is as good a Rioja as you’re likely to find for under €5! Its distinctive packaging puts it up there with other memorable Rioja brands like Marqués de Caceres.

Where does Siglo Rioja come from?

Perhaps not surprisingly, this is a Rioja wine and is produced by Bodegas AGE. The producer’s history dates all the way back to 1881, and these guys certainly know what they’re doing. The wine today is made by oenologist Cruz García, who follows traditional winemaking methods practised in the Rioja region for generations. Siglo wine comes from Fuenmayor in the Rioja Alta region, though it doesn’t stay there: Siglo Rioja is widely exported, with key markets including Japan and Europe.

Siglo Rioja Crianza 2014

The current release is Siglo Rioja Crianza 2014. It’s a rather classic Rioja blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Carignan. As a Rioja Crianza, this wine has been aged for a minimum of one year in oak barrels and a further six months in oak. The American oak used imparts a full and expressive flavour. When tasting this Siglo wine, there’s a lot going on:
