So, this is our guide to why you should have a glass of it in your hand right now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Great Location:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Priorat is found in the hills of Catalunya. Interestingly, the vines grow on a unique soil of red slate mixed with tiny bits of mica. This soil, known as llicorella, is excellent at reflecting heat. As a result, the vines receive good signals for ripening, and avoid frost damage despite being up in the hills. Being on a slope ensures that the grapes get maximum levels of sunshine. It\u2019s a fantastic site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Kind of Wine that Priorat Produces:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Traditional:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Classic Priorat is a very alcoholic wine. It is made from Garnacha and Cari?ena vines with very small yields, and it\u2019s aged for an extended period of time. Some examples have even used soleras. The process tends to give them qualities of hung meat and fungi. That\u2019s not to knock this style, as there\u2019s a time and a place for that sort of wine as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.invinic.com\/en\/tio-pepe-shows-sherrys-savoury-side\/\">Tio Pepe Shows Sherry\u2019s Savoury Side<\/a>\u2019 makes clear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The New Style:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is the style that\u2019s been making the headlines. Since encouraging experimentation with other styles, Priorat has earned the highest classification in the Spanish wine system, DOC. In fact, to know that you\u2019re getting a good specimen, look for \u2018DOC\u2019 on the label.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the difference is the addition of non-Spanish grapes. Often the wine still includes Garnacha and Cari?ena, but they appear alongside Shiraz, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.invinic.com\/en\/pinot-meow-3-reasons-to-buy-wine-for-your-pet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinot Noir<\/a> and Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, Priorat wines have a really strong bramble flavour. It\u2019s also possible to detect new oak, but the big tannin and pronounced fruit character mean that these wines have great ageing potential. By all means buy them to drink, but considering improving a few with age.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Good Priorat Wine to Try:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invinic.com\/en\/ferrer-bobet-2009\">Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles<\/a><\/strong> shows how a little experimentation pays off. It mainly uses Cari?ena and Garnacha but with Cabernet Sauvignon as well. The tasting notes include <strong>lots of red fruit flavour<\/strong>, and some <strong>minerality<\/strong> as well. There\u2019s a <strong>good balance<\/strong> between <strong>acidity<\/strong> and <strong>tannin<\/strong> too. As a result, the bottle picked up <strong>92 points<\/strong> from Robert Parker, <strong>92<\/strong> from Vinous and <strong>95<\/strong> from Gu\u00eda Pe\u00f1\u00edn.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invinic.com\/en\/barranc-dels-comellars-2014\">Barranc Dels Comellars<\/a><\/strong> mixes things up even more. The bottle uses Black Grenache in a mix with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Expect more <strong>plummyness<\/strong> from the merlot along with the <strong>bramble<\/strong> and <strong>tannin<\/strong> provided by the Cabernet Sauvignon. Gu\u00eda Pe\u00f1\u00edn gave it <strong>89 points<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invinic.com\/en\/mas-den-gil-coma-blanca-2012\">Coma Blanca<\/a><\/strong> really is very different. It\u2019s white, for a start. Yet the experiment has payed off, as Robert Parker gave the bottle <strong>93 points<\/strong>. It\u2019s a <strong>spicy white<\/strong> which would go well with curries, and particularly those with roasted meat, as it has a <strong>fuller body<\/strong> for a white.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invinic.com\/en\/alvaro-palacios-lermita-2000-magnum\">L\u2019Ermita 2000 Magnum<\/a><\/strong> is for really pushing the boat out. Not only is magnum bottle an ideal size for special occasions, but it picked up an <strong>incredibly<\/strong> <strong>rare 100 points<\/strong> with Gu\u00eda Pe\u00f1\u00edn! Mind you, the 2000 vintage will set you back \u20ac1600.
