Since its creation in 1864, and despite its different owners, the winery Vega Sicilia has always paid attention to exceptional quality of its wines.
In 1982, the Alvarez family was entrusted with the sale of the winery, but in the end they have bought the winery themselves. They have then adapted it to the trends of the wine sector, and have expanded the original area of vineyards in Valbuena de Duero.
Currently, three references are made under the Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero: Vega Sicilia Único, mainly consisting of the variety Tempranillo, Vega Sicilia Valbuena with a blend of Tempranillo and Malbec and Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial with grapes from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Recently the winery Vega Sicilia celebrated its 150 anniversary, a long way towards one of the most significant Spanish wine producers, and with an annual turnover of 30 million euros in 2013. For this celebration, a gala dinner was held, with wine experts and representatives of prestigious international wine cellars, such as Cheval Blanc from France, Egon Müller-Scharzhof from Germany or the Spanish Marqués de Riscal.
