Do you own a wine cooler bucket? Not many people do, but we think it’s almost essential for any serious wine lover! Maybe you’ve seen wine cooler buckets in bars and restaurants, and they seem pretty useful there. That’s all well and good for a busy establishment serving lots of wine and other beverages to swathes of paying customers. But is it worthwhile to have a wine cooler bucket at home? We certainly think so, and will try to explain why. First, let’s make sure that we’re all on the same page.

What is a wine cooler bucket?

When we say “wine cooler bucket”, we are really talking about a category of products as opposed to one particular model. Cooler buckets for wine can come in all shapes and sizes, from the basic and functional to the grand and ostentatious. Some will be specifically intended for professional service in high-end restaurants, others will be used at glitzy nightclubs and will appear flashy. Some may be branded, for example with the logos of popular Champagne houses. In any case, we are basically talking about a bucket or similar receptacle, large enough to take at least one bottle of wine and then a mixture of ice and water.

When to use a wine cooler bucket?

You can use a wine cooler bucket at any time when you are serving chilled wine. Some of our favourite uses include:

  • Last minute parties. You just arrive home from work and find that your significant other has decided to plan a little party on the spur of the moment. You’re not prepared, and your guests will arrive at any minute. Solve the problem by taking your room temperature wine, fill the wine cooler and wait for your guests!
  • Big parties. Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduation ceremonies, you name it. Many people like to host large groups at home, but it can be a nightmare to ensure that everybody has a drink in their hand and that nobody is neglected. Assuming you aren’t hiring outside servers (or even if you are), a tactically placed wine cooler bucket in a prominent place can ensure that the wine keeps flowing at all times.
  • On a hot date. Cooking dinner for a romantic interest can be intimate and very impressive. All the better if it’s fine cuisine with an immaculately laid table, candlelight, and – you guessed it – a wine cooler bucket. A small and tasteful wine cooler bucket here can instantly transform the atmosphere from your dining room into a private Michelin-starred table for two.

What to put in a wine cooler bucket?

Put whatever you want in there, but wine would be the obvious choice. Any wine that you would put in the fridge is fair game, so let’s take a look at some of our top tips:

  • Champagne and sparkling wine. Celebrate in style with a bottle of something special on ice. Nothing makes a statement in this way quite like Dom Pérignon, but take your pick of your favourite Champagne, Cava, Prosecco or other sparkling wine.
  • White wine. Fresh and young white wines in a wine cooler bucket just scream “summer”. A lively Rueda such as Analivia Sauvignon Blanc is perfect here.
  • Rosé wine. Rosé can go great with many barbeque foods and summer salads, so is a great fit for something different in your ice bucket. A large format rosé such as a magnum of Le Crazy Tropez Rosé makes a great talking point at a garden party and will keep your guests’ thirsts quenched for twice as long.
  • Red wine. Last but not least, you can use your wine cooler bucket to cool down a light-bodied red on a hot day. Wines made from the Gamay grape in Beaujolais, France, are perfect here. A great example of this style is Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2015.

Wine cooler buckets are so handy. We have a wine refrigerator, and generally keep our whites and sparkling in there. But, I like to keep my sparkling cold when drinking, so a wine bucket is the way to go!
