Tempranillo wines from Spain are very popular. You can get Tempranillo wine from Rioja, Ribera del Duero and other Spanish wine regions that are made in a multitude of styles and quality levels. The Tempranillo grape is very versatile and responds well to oak ageing, such as in the Rioja region. Such wines can be very expensive, though you do not need to spend a fortune to get your hands on a good quality Tempranillo wine for a reasonable price. Here we will offer you some examples of the best value Tempranillo on the market, including the very popular El Coto Rioja.

El Coto Rioja

You may be familiar with El Coto Rioja, and with good reason: It’s a great value Tempranillo wine. The maker, El Coto de Rioja, produces this wine in a Crianza style, whereby it is aged in oak casks for 12 months and a further 6 months in barrel before its release. The result is an immensely enjoyable Tempranillo with lots of fresh fruit and liquorice flavours to engage your palate. This Rioja Crianza is ready to drink right now, and is always a good bet for a party or other informal gathering.

Altos Ibéricos Crianza

Sticking with the Rioja region and the Crianza level, consider Altos Ibéricos Crianza from Miguel Torres. Torres is a quality producer and has the scale and expertise to produce very high level wines at very reasonable prices. Try the Altos Ibéricos in place of El Coto Rioja and you will be amazed. As a young Crianza, the wine can be enjoyed by itself or equally alongside a wide variety of food pairings – our favourites are game birds and aged cheeses!

Finca La Meda Tempranillo

This next wine comes from the Toro region, where they call Tempranillo “Tinta de Toro”. Finca La Meda Tempranillo is a young Tempranillo that has not undergone any extensive oak aging. As a result, the wine tastes incredibly fresh and is very generous with powerful primary fruit flavours. There is a good fleshy texture here and you will find this Toro to be incredibly versatile. Even better is the price tag – this wine offers serious value, consider stocking up by the case for your next social event and you will get a lot of bang for your buck!

Condado De Oriza Joven

Here we have a seriously good value Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duero region: Condado De Oriza Joven is a superb young wine at a seriously good price. With no oak ageing, this Joven (young) wine has very powerful and highly concentrated fruit characteristics. Pick up a bottle and you will enjoy a rounded, smooth and silky Tempranillo that is great with most foods and perhaps even better by itself! With this flavour profile and at this price point, consider this one for any large functions including office parties, Christmas parties and even weddings.

Marqués de Riscal Rosé

Did you know that Tempranillo doesn’t always have to produce a red wine? Marqués de Riscal Rosé, from the famous Rioja producer Marqués de Riscal, is a young and fruity rosé made from 100% Tempranillo. Expect bright aromas of red berries and young fruits, and a pleasantly refreshing palate. This is a perfect aperitif to demonstrate to your guests just how versatile Tempranillo can be – and, even more so, the great value that Tempranillo wines have to offer!
