Wine shouldn’t be complicated. Wine should be about pleasure, enjoyment and savouring special moments with friends and family. One can enjoy wine on purely a sensory basis, enjoying what’s in the glass in front of them and enjoying how it tastes. While there is a whole industry solely devoted to wine accessories, a lot of what’s out there is simply not necessary when it comes to getting the most out of your wine. We’ve identified the five most important wine accessories that you really should own!

1. Corkscrew

This one seems obvious, but it’s vital. Assuming that at least some of the wine you drink is sealed with a cork, you’ll need some way of removing said cork and getting at the delicious wine within. Your first vital wine accessory is thus a corkscrew. There are many styles and varieties available, from the basic and serviceable to the grandiose and impractical. Our recommendation – and indeed the universal favourite of wine professionals everywhere – is the “waiter’s friend” corkscrew, sometimes called the “wine key”. At first glance it may seem trickier to use than some alternatives, but you will get used to it very quickly and never want to go back to anything else. Waiter’s friend corkscrews are very affordable, and a decent one will last you for a very long time.

2. Good wine glasses

Some may not even consider these to be wine accessories, but we do! Wine glasses range from very cheap to very expensive, with everything in between. One school of thought would say that you should not spend much on your wine glasses, because invariably they will break. We don’t agree. Sure, it’ll depend on your budget and the occasion – for a wedding or large party with lots of kids running around, maybe you don’t take out the top shelf stemware – but we think investing in good wine glasses is seriously worth doing. Some of the best producers of high quality wine glasses include Riedel and Spiegelau. INVINIC has you covered with all the wine glasses that you could possibly need.

3. Decanter

A decanter is a good thing to have, not just for its ability to aerate your wine and thus unlock new dimensions of aroma and flavour, but also because it makes a seriously good talking point! A decanter of red wine on the dinner table instantly adds class, prestige and exudes quality. It turns a meal into an event!

4. Microfibre cleaning cloth

You may not have heard of this one, but trust us that once you try it you’ll question if you had ever truly kept your glasses clean beforehand! The microfibre cloth is a favourite of restaurants, wine bars and winery tasting rooms.

5. Coravin

OK, it’s not essential, but the Coravin is seriously worth considering for any lover of fine wines. As far as wine accessories are concerned, this is not for everybody, but if you keep a cellar of seriously good wines, this little device is all but essential. It allows you to taste and drink your wines without ever pulling the cork, thus preserving the rest of the wine perfectly. Keep a Coravin handy and you can have the occasional glass of Domaine de la Romanée Conti Romanée Conti 2001 without having to drink the entire €14,900 bottle at once!
