This past week a “little” gem, DON PX CONVENTO SELECCIÓN 1946, arrived to our cellar. A wine made from Pedro Ximénez grapes under the A.O. Montilla-Moriles.

This PX was made from the first harvest after World War II and it has been ageing in American oak until bottled, in September 2011. The bottle is wax-sealed and diamond-signed, only 852 units were produced and it can be enjoyed, in an optimal condition for consumption, until 2060. A wine with a powerfull nose and mid-palate, that leaves no one indifferent.

“Quality as first and only standard” is Toro Albala’s motto. The winery is located in Aguilar de la Frontera and is considered one of the Golden 100 among the 21st century Spanish wineries.

But, what is it said about this wine?

Luis Gutierrez, the Wine Advocate’s reviewer for Spain, Chile and Argentina, says: “This is an extreme wine, my first description was an ultra- mega- super-concentrated wine. It is incredibly powerful, in the nose and the mid-palate, full of umami, sweet cinnamon, Christmas Cake, camphor, gasoline, lemongrass, Belgian chocolate and butter. It is incredibly complex and rich, sweet, balanced and smooth on the palate, it is very sweet and a bit salty at the same time and over time it develops a note of black olives”. “These wines are kept for generations and offered only in the smallest amounts, but it is amazing to be able to purchase and drink something that old”.
